Unicorns are gorgeous.
Magical, beautiful and simply fantastic. And they can fly! Just like me. Except for the fact that I’m not able to fly. Nobody notices that there’s a unicorn living in their stables. They only see an alpaca. Until one animal looks very closely.
Themes: LGBTQ+, being different, being yourself, gender, cross dressing, dressing up, unicorn, alpaca
Reviews:
'This virtuoso picture book is highly simple and at the same time very layered and socially responsible. It implies the message of being yourself and acceptance within a story full of fantasy and fine humor. Without pointing moral fingers or threatening messages, but subtly and with a lot of humor. Everyone reads and sees in it what they like, which can lead to engaging conversations. [...] The story builds steadily to a liberating ending and shows the young and older reader/viewer how beautiful it is when everyone can be themselves.
The text is simple and leaves all the work to the expressive prints full of color and expression. The characters of the different animals, the many details in each print, the atmospheres created, everything is thought out and right. Without a doubt highly recommended, especially in these times when “coloring outside the lines” is still not universally accepted. As a warm plea for a more beautiful society where everyone can be themselves.' (Eric Vanthillo, August 2023)
'The illustrations depict the feeling of unicorn beautifully! When Lama is happy and delighted with who he is, the pages are white or brightly colored. When doubt strikes because others destroy that confidence, the illustrations turn dark and gray. The well-trodden unicorn gets a deepening layer in this book. A book you can (read aloud) multiple times! [...] Time to zoom in on who the children are. What do they stand for, what are their talents? What makes them unique? What is their inner unicorn? But also: What do they have doubts about? What do they find difficult? [...] This book can be an opportunity to make an entry into children's conversations. A conversation about talents, about wishes and thresholds.' (Saar Beyens, teacher-reader, 2024)
